Girl Meeting this Sunday!
We'll see you at 3p this Sunday at TBPS to work on the "Science of Spa"!
I put a notice out on Front Porch Forum for snowshoes and now have 4 pairs for us to use! We live in an amazing community! If you would like to give your girl a pair for the holidays, please let me know and I will bring them on Sunday or to school. She can use them when we go snowshoeing as a troop, and we will donate any unused ones back to the Council so other girls can use them. Each donor received a tax donation credit for 2015, too.
For our "Science of Spa" meeting, this is what I have planned for this Sunday's 3pm meeting at TBPS:
- Brownies - Home Scientist Badge
- At home - grow rock candy
- Meeting: Make pepper dance with a balloon (static)
- Meeting: lemon & lime density
- Meeting: Blow up a balloon without your breath (baking soda & vinegar) + use for cleaning products!
- Meeting: giant bubbles (glycerin) + use glycerin for spa products
- Juniors - Different Badges!
- Flowers badge #3 - Flowers are healers/are calming + make bath beads!
- Digital Photographer badge #2 - photograph friends
- Staying Fit #3 - Create a stress-free zone
- Jeweler #3- Make a bead bracelet or
- Jeweler #5 - Make jewelry for someone
Let's see what we can get done!

Geocaching Catch Up!
I had this blog posting in "drafts" and didn't know it - so sorry!
The good news is that Sarah and Celia noticed that our geocache has already been found 5 times! Our cache is called "Be a Scout" and is available at www.geocaching.com. I'll post the quotes of the folks who found it and then follow up with the badge requirements you can finish at home. Please let me know when your girl finishes the badge so we can buy it for our Badge Ceremony!
"Saw this come online when I was at the car dealer's, and within walking distance of my house! Couldn't wait to get home, grab the dog Max, and get out and walking. Did a very familiar walk of about 0.3 miles each way, around the corner to the parking area, then across the field to the disc golf course. The container was well hidden, and fallen leaves this time of year make things even tougher. At one point Max was sniffing with interest at a spot, but no, the cache wasn't there. Coordinates are right on the money, and after a short search I found it. I had a lot of great times in Girl Scouts during the 1960s when I was growing up. Geocaching was still almost 40 years in the future, but we were happy with hikes, nature walks, and camp."

"Once I chose a parking spot (it looks like all three possible parking areas are about equidistant), Casey and I ventured out on the soggy, muddy trails (you warned us!). The GPSr took me right to a promising area before it started bouncing. I checked a few places before returning to the original GZ and making the find. A nicely stocked and hidden cache! I too was a Girl Scout, every year I could be one, from Brownie through Senior (they didn't have Daisies then). I was also a G.S. camp counselor at Camp May Flather in Virginia, and my camp name, Waffle, was the basis for our family's caching name. Scouts rock! TFTC!"
----
The five steps of the Junior Geocaching badge involve:
• Preparing for your adventure - done!
• Learning to use a GPS receiver - you may want to brush up with her on this!
• Making a trade item - done!
• Going on a geocaching adventure - done!
• Taking part a travel-bug’s travels - we did some, but try to follow the trackable Sara included!
---
Brownie Letterboxing badge involves:
- Have a family member hide 5 things around the house and follow their clues to find the objects.
- Choose a special stamp - done!
- Create a clue - create one for our letterbox, and please send it to me! You can:
- Create a "fill in the blank" clue ( Clue: "Look ___ the slide at the park" Question: "What is the opposite of over?")
- Create a scramble ("Look under..." is written "Kool rndeu...")
- Search for a letterbox in a new place! (www.letterboxing.org)
- Make a letterbox - done! (http://www.letterboxing.org/BoxView.php?boxnum=69479)

The International Festival is this weekend! Our calendar showed it on Saturday, but as I look at the schedule for Waterbury's Holiday Stroll, it seems that Sunday would be a better day for going to Essex Fairgrounds. It opens at 10a, so we'll have to head out around 9:30a. Get in touch (498-3947) if you'd like to carpool and encourage your girl to wear her uniform to the Festival!
Here is the Holiday Stroll lineup for Saturday in Waterbury:
Saturday night is the Festival of Lights, and we've whipped up a Girl Scout lantern - wear your uniform and come find us to walk together!

Last week for fall product sale!
I'm assuming you have already received emails from Council about this fall fundraiser, but I was finally able to get some quirks worked out so that our troop could participate!
This is our best way to get some funds into our troop account quickly!

Parent meeting next Sunday
I'd like the adults to meet from 4-5:30 on Sunday the 25th to discuss troop plans and put together our calendar for the year.
We can also review any steps you might still need to complete your volunteer status.

We'll meet at my house: 85 Clover Lane - turn onto East St (across from Hen of the Wood), take the first left onto Clover Ln, and it's the last house on the left.
See you there!

Meeting on Saturday, August 29 from 10-11:30 at TBPS
I'm looking forward to seeing all of you at the meeting today! We're going to continue working on the first part of the Girl Scout Law, which is doing our best to be Honest and Fair.
In our opening circle, we'll practice the Girl Scout Promise:
And we'll read through the Girl Scout Law:
We'll sing "Make New Friends" in a round again, and we'll make sure to practice listening as well as singing!
Then we'll listen to our theme song for today (click on the image):
We'll then play a couple of games to demonstrate being Honest and Fair:

We'll then play a couple of games to demonstrate being Honest and Fair:
- A girl will tell a truth or a fib, and everyone has to race up to the happy (true) or sad (fib) face.
- Girls each have a cup and the adults distribute different numbers of pennies to each girl. Eventually, we have a conversation about why it doesn't feel fair and have them figure out a way to make it fair
Our badge activities will also focus on the Honest and Fair Theme:
- We may draw Lupe the Lupine flower (she represents the Daisy Flower Friend for being Honest and Fair) on a "mural" with a limited number of supplies to practice sharing and being fair.
- We will use mixed media to complete this project, so the Brownies will be completing Steps 4 & 5 of the Painting Badge. At the last meeting, we did Steps 1-3, so they are now done with that badge!
- Juniors will be completing Step 2 of the Drawing badge through this activity.
- All girls will then have a chance to work with another girl to create a cartoon character or logo that represents being Honest and Fair.
- Juniors will be completing Step 4 of the Drawing badge through this activity.
All of these activities help Daisies complete their first flower petal for their uniforms and help the older girls review the first part of the Girl Scout Law.
It's important for the girls to understand that they will start running parts of the meeting, so we'll talk about the jobs and then decide who will do each job at the next meeting (being fair about it, of course!).
At the next meeting, we'll make a Kaper Chart that we'll use at each meeting and we'll start collecting $4 dues at each meeting (these are optional, but support our activities and equal $1 a week, if you want to use it as part of allowance...). Here are some examples of a Kaper Chart:
At the Closing Circle, we'll sing a part of "Linger" and do the Friendship Squeeze! This song is usually sung at the end of a camping session, so we'll only sing the first slide of that's shown on this video.
