November Girl Scout Meeting Overview

We focused part of the meeting on first aid where we discussed ways to prevent accidents, how to handle some situations, and items that we should have in a first aid kit.  For the girls to get the First Aid Badge we need to create a mini first aid kit so we thought that for the next meeting everyone could bring in one item for each girl to add to their kit.  Some of the items that we thought of are listed below.  Please let us know what you will bring so that we do not have too much of one item.

  • Band aids
  • Bandages
  • Medicine - Benadryl, Advil, etc.
  • Antiseptic wipes
  • Antibiotic ointment
  • Tweezers
  • Itch cream
  • Gloves
  • Ice pack
  • Thermometer
  • Tape
  • Gauze
I can check the dollar store to see if I can find something for the girls to use as a kit or if anyone has any other ideas please let me know.

We also want to do something for the local Ronald McDonald house.  There are some ideas floating around such as preparing a meal, making holiday cookies or gingerbread houses, or collecting donations.  The girls just want to do something special so we still have to work that out.

Other ideas that are still being considered is doing something for the Syrian refugees and for NCAL.  The how and what is still being worked out, but I don't want us to lose sight of either of these.

Adult planning meeting is scheduled for December 4th at 4 o'clock at The Cork.

Next Girl Scout meeting is scheduled for December 11th at 4 o'clock.

If anyone has any other times that they want to get together and do something please speak up.  We can do more meetings, but with the holidays right now I know it can be difficult to get all of us together.  Even if only some want to work on something then that is fine.

***Reminder: The girls need to find/research a woman who has done something important in history and then share this with the other girls at the next meeting.  They can do a simple summary or prepare a presentation, whatever works for them.  ***

Tomorrow Night is Important for Our Girls

I would love to host an Elections Party at our house, but most election results aren't called until after 11pm...and even with Daylight Savings Time, that's far too late to stay up!

Please spend some time with your girl so she understands the magnitude of our individual responsibility in this country and that tomorrow's decision will shape her world.

I remember how special it was when Rowan & I got to celebrate a FIRST for our country when we chose a President of color...and how proud I was that she was born into this era.

Tomorrow, I sincerely hope that our girls will be able to celebrate another FIRST for our country...and continue to grow up believing that we live in a country of limitless opportunity.

Fall Sale Ending!

Hello Everyone!

We need to submit our paper orders for the fall product sale by this Friday! Yikes!  (I don't know about you, but it kind of snuck up on me.)  If you could please send your orders to Katie or to girlscouts30228@gmail.com by Thursday night I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you and please let me know if you have any questions!!

Adult meeting tonight!

Just a reminder that the adults of troop 30228 are meeting tonight at 6p at Cork to discuss the year and this Sunday's meeting. See you there!

Girl Scout Communication

Subject: Girl Scout Communication

This email is for all currently- enrolled Girl Scout families.  I will also be sharing it with the families who are interested, so we may have new folks at our first adult meeting!

So, it looks like we will primarily use email to communicate as an adult group, and we can check in at our first adult meeting to see if Jaimie is able to receive texts for quick check-ins that may have to do with on-site coordination.

I have several different email accounts that I get on my phone, but I will try to send from this account so that you know it's Girl Scout related!

A few notes:

Sept 9:

Jill and Madison (Daisy) have volunteered to be at TBPS at 6p with a Girl Scout table for the Ice Cream social tomorrow night.  I believe Ricci and Carmen (Junior) will also be joining them…Thank you!  I am picking up outreach materials from Council today and will have them at my house for you, Jill.  (I'll text you more details)

Sept 16

Fall Product Sale starts (yikes!)  This is the fastest way for us to earn money for the troop, so please ask your girls to participate.  Information will be available at that time or you can wait until the meeting on the 25th.  Ordering lasts until Oct. 21, unless we decide to do fall product booth sales.

Sunday, Sept. 25

This looks like our best date for our first troop meeting, so I will coordinate with TBPS to reserve the space from 4-6p.  Typically, we have an adult meeting during the week before at Cork…which has moved!  I haven't been in the new space yet, so let's plan to meet there at 6p on Thursday, Sept. 22.  We typically do official troop meetings once a month and then sprinkle in activities as we/the girls coordinate them.  I know Carmen and Rowan (Junior) have their heads together about making the first meeting a "bring a friend" theme…

The monthly meeting dates will be (from 4-6p at TBPS for now)

Sunday, Oct. 23

Sunday, Nov. 20

Sunday, Dec. 11

(2017 TBD at our first adult meeting)

Other dates to keep on your calendars for troop activities are:

Sunday, Oct. 16 – turn in fall product sale orders

Sunday, Nov. 6

Sunday, Dec. 4

I've started an agenda for our first adult meeting which you should be able to access and edit by clicking this link.  Please add any topics that are on your/your girl's mind…we'll prioritize and see what we can get to during our meeting!

2016 Fall Meeting Dates

Monthly meetings will be on:

Sunday, Sept. 25th
Sunday, Oct. 23rd
Sunday, Nov. 20th
Sunday, Dec. 11th
More information to come as we figure out the rest of the dates!

Jay Peak WaterPark this Saturday!

Please join us at 10am for a day of fun and celebration at Jay Peak this Saturday!

All registered girls and adults who sold cookies will be paid for by the troop proceeds that you earned! Family and friends are welcome and can take advantage of the discounted price of $20 for kids and $28 for adults.

At 10am, please meet in the community room that has couches and a fussball table so that we finalize our numbers and hand out badges.

I'm hoping that after that short ceremony, we will be able to take a short tour (15 min) to the pump rooms so the girls can see the mechanics of the place and learn a bit about how it all works.

Then it's playtime!

They have food and drink there or you can bring your own snacks. If you want a locker or towels, please bring $$.

I am currently driving River, Rowan, Lyra, Carmen, and Talie. I have room for 2 more, if anyone's interested. Please meet me on the right side of the Shaw's parking lot at 8:30a (plates FMD 921 on a silver van).

I plan to pull our girls around 3 so that we can be back home by 5.

Please text 802.498.3947 with any questions!

This is some communications I had with a volunteer coordinator below I met with Natalia and Carmen (and Celia by coincidence) at the library.  They are eager to do a fundraiser and have a few ideas.  Here is a link that I need to explore further but we can save bags or bottle caps and send them in to be recycled and redeemed.  Items that are not usually recyclable...  I've already started saving cereal bags.  Maybe we can get school friends to collect over the summer.  Carmen said Bake sale and I said, please no but it's on the table.  haha.  And Natalia thought we could ask to put donation jars at the book fair or other locations.  Whatever we do, I really feel that the main objective is raising awareness and promoting acceptance.  We have the Agents of Change Journey book and thought maybe we could gear this toward fulfilling that piece.

Hi Laurie, Unfortunately, no one from our group was able to make it to the meeting.  I hope it went well.  Will there be continuing meetings?  I will sign on to the Rutland Welcomes Slack group and try to get caught up.  Thanks.

Hello, I saw your name and email on the Rutland Welcomes page.  I live in Waterbury and my daughter is part of a small troop of Girl Scouts who have an interest in learning how we can help. (Our group is about 6 girls and at least a few adults).  Can you keep us in mind and we will try to keep a look out for opportunities to get involved?  Thanks.

There is a Facebook group called Rutland Welcomes.  There is lots of discussion there about volunteer efforts, etc.

I've been reading meeting notes which you can access if you join the "Slack" group. There are links from the Rutland Welcome page. Someone shared this link relating to donations needed. Right now there is no storage space for donations so if we are going to collect physical items, we'd need a local place to keep them in the meantime.

My ideas for the girls to get involved: Write letters either in our language or theirs... Contact the library to get language learning/translating books for Waterbury (or we fundraise and make the donation to our library or to the children directly)... host an art project with the children (less talking required!)

Sunday meeting time change

Based on our crazy competing obligations, we'll be meeting from 4-5p on Sunday at TBPS.

Jill has keys to the building since I'm not sure we'll be able to be there on time.

The game plan is to have the girls:

-create invitations for the community camporee (for our lifetime members)

-let them know how much money they've earned for the troop and that we're going to Jay Peak Waterpark on Sat., June 11 because of their hard work. $20/girl and $28/adult - troop will pay for registered adults/girls.

Max amount coming out of the troop account for this trip is $240 (girls) + $168 (adults) = $408.

We had also committed to renewing girl and adult memberships next year, which would mean reserving $360 (girls) + $90 = $450.

-So, we need to ask the girls for their ideas on how much to keep, spend, donate, etc.

-We would also like to collaborate with the girls to name/assign all the jobs for the tea party on May 15 and describe what their responsibilities are.

That's all for this week! If it's decent weather after the meeting, I'm interested in driving to Hope Davey to check on the geocache and do a few Venture Vermont activities...come join if you're interested!

Venture Vermont

Here is the link to Venture Vermont - it is editable online before you print and you need one per person.  You can have group (family) photos, though.

Each activity has a points value and when you get to 250 pts, you get a free state parks pass for this year and next!

Our troop has already completed:

-go for a hike (10 pts)

-climb a tree or boulder (probably! 5 pts)

-try geocaching (15pts)

There are several others that I bet you have already done!  I'm hoping we can have the girls get together to do some of these on an impromptu basis!  As we discussed last night, if we can get at least 2 families together for badge/VV activities, please let the rest of the troop know of your plans so that we can join as our schedules allow!

Have fun!

April 9 overnight

Adult Meeting this Wed.

Just a reminder that we have an adult planning meeting at Cork on Wednesday at 6p to prep for our girl meeting this Sunday at 3p.

Since we are not doing the tea party until May, I'd like to suggest we do a follow-up hike to our geocache at the end of the meeting. I'm sure Jill has some other activities to prep for the tea party, and bring any ideas you have hatching!

3/13 Meeting outline

From Hayley:

I think we can get through all this stuff so that the girls can earn their manners badges in one big swoop. I also know that Denise would like to finish up her mural. I think we will need some parent power to run the stations, maybe we can enlist the help of a Brownie mom and Daisy Mom...I also do not have the Daisy book, or story to read. So, it would be great if someone could bring in their Daisy book.

I think any girl can do any station, but they need to hit their stations to earn the badge.

Brownie stations (making friends badge):

1: Parent led discussion about friendship: How do you introduce yourself to a new friend, practice by introducing yourself to 3 others at the meeting. Sometimes friends disagree, discuss what to do when you and a friend argue.  What are nice things to say to a friend? Eg. "I love your new shoes, are they new?"

2: River Rocks: decorate a river rock to give to a friend at the meeting (swap).

3: Tea Party: practice your new skills.

Junior stations (social butterfly badge):

1: parent led discussion: table manners: placement of plate, silverware, etc.  What manners do you use at the dinner table?

2: Thank you Cards: write a thank you card to someone: a teacher, a parent, a counselor, etc…

3: Juniors will set up the tea party.

4: Tea Party: there will be conversation cards at the table. They will use these cards for polite conversations.

Daisy stations (Respect Pedal):

1: parent led story: Gloria

2: Charades: Respect Dos and Don'ts :

Respect "Dos":

1.      Eat Healthy

2.      Brush Hair

3.      Go to Dentist

4.      Go to Doctor

5.      Be polite

6.      Do homework

7.      Take a bath

8.      Exercise

Respect "Don'ts":

1.      Go out messy

2.      Burp

3.      Pick nose

4.      Eat Junk

5.      Be late

6.      Be mean

7.      Be lazy

8.      Refuse to go to bed

3: Tea Party

Upcoming meeting reminder

Just a note to remind you that our adult planning meeting is Wednesday at 6 PM at Cork.

Please bring any money you have collected for cookies on Wednesday night, since we need to deposit it this week.

Please also let Katie know if you need more cookies, since we will be going to the cupboard this week.

This Saturday evening is our wine and cookie pairing at Cork, and our girl meeting is this Sunday at 3 PM at TBPS.

Come to the meeting with your calendars so we can determine:

- what, if any, cookie booths we want to add before the end of the season.

- when we want to go to Jay Peak waterpark with the girls

- A date for the tea party at the senior center

-when and whether we want to go sugaring, perhaps at Denise's

At the girl meeting this Sunday, we should:

-finish the mural (Denise)
-take the next steps in planning the tea party (Jill)
-review the cookie income and ask the girls to brainstorm some ideas for how to use it
-perhaps do the history walk that Hayley created for town meeting day

Cookie Update - Congrats, Ladies!

You did an amazing job this past weekend!  On Tuesday, River, Rowan & Lyra deposited $1220 into our troop bank account from all the cookies you sold over the weekend!

At Ben & Jerry's you braved the cold and sold almost 200 boxes of cookies!

And you used your charm and cash register to sell almost 135 boxes at Town Meeting Day!
This weekend, we have a date with Bridgeside Books from 9:30a-12:30p on Saturday and we're at Cabot Annex from 11:30-4:30 on Sunday.  Please sign up on VolunteerSpot so that we know what coverage we'll have.

If you need extra cookies or have questions about cookie sales, please be in touch with Katie at kltruesell@gmail.com.

Thanks so much for all the great collaborative work you've done!

Culminating Event- Tea party at the senior center- Please vote for a date and time.

 We're having a party!

If you weren't able to join us on Monday you weren't able to hear the exciting news...We're having a tea party at the senior center in Waterbury! For the next few meetings we will be working towards this event by making invitations, learning about proper etiquette, preparing for speaking with new people and building community connections that will continue to grow. We are working on a date for some time in April with the center and need you to complete the poll that can be found at this link:
http://doodle.com/poll/88asn582tw26p6cm

We will use this poll to plan our event and your response is critical in ensuring that we have as many girls there as possible. Please respond to this poll by March 2nd. I will contact the senior center and confirm a date on the 3rd.
